Youth Sports Programs

The City of Trinidad offers many sports programs for kids of all ages. Our programs are designed to provide an opportunity for kids to have fun, facebook.png
participate and learn fundamental sports skills.

Kids, parents and coaches are expected to follow five simple rules:

  1. Everyone Plays: Our goal is for ALL kids to play. We mandate that every player on every team must play every game.

  2. Open Registration: Our programs are open to ALL children. Each sport has age requirements.

  3. Positive Attitude: Encouragement of player effort provides for greater enjoyment by the players and ultimately leads to better skilled and better motivated players. Remember, sports should be fun!

  4. Good Sportsmanship: We strive to create a positive environment based on mutual respect rather than a win-at-all costs attitude.

  5. Respect for Others: Everyone involved in our youth sports programs will show respect for others.
This includes your teammates and coaches, the other team's players and coaches, parents, and officials.

Coaches, Sponsors & Officials

Teams participating in the City of Trinidad Youth Programs are sponsored by local businesses. A donation of $100.00 will sponsor one team. Sponsorship includes having your business name printed on your team's jersey and your business will be included in the list of sponsors provided to the radio and the newspaper.

Businesss can sponsor one team per sport each year.

If your business would like to sponsor a youth team, please contact Marty Velasquez at 719-846-4454 or send him an email.

Our sport programs are coached by volunteers. Coaching youth sports is about teaching the fundamentals properly, developing the basic team concepts, and encouraging all players to participate and enjoy the sport.

Some tips for our Coaches:

Keep it simple: Most sports are simple to play and can be enjoyed by all ages. Complicated formations, plays and strategies can confuse the kids on your team. This can frustrate them and make them feel that they are not being successful. This can make them dislike the sport. By keeping it simple, you will build self-esteem and confidence.

Work on basic skills: Teach the fundamental skills of the sport and concentrate on the basic plays. Help players learn the importance of proper execution. Stop practice to help individual players improve, but don’t interfere excessively.

Work with every player on your team:  All players on your team should be given equal attention. It is important that every player participates and has fun, rather than just a few good players dominating the action.

Teach your team to play fair: Playing fair is an essential part of youth sports. Teach your team to respect teammates, the other team, coaches, the rules and the officials who uphold them. Remember, kids learn by watching you, so the best way to teach them about playing fair is to set a good example.

Keep winning in perspective: Winning games is important in sports. However, help players and their parents become aware of other important goals: learning skills, phyical fitness, being a good leader and a good follower, dealing with the emotions of sports and having fun. These lessons are more valuable and will leave a stronger impression on the kids you coach than the final score of any game they played.

To become a volunteer coach or assistance coach, you must pass a background check.  Fill out the Coach & Volunteer Application  and email it or bring it to the Community Center.

Our Youth Sports Programs are always in need of officials. You must be at least 16 years old. No experience necessary, the Sports & Recreation staff will teach you everything you need to know and will provide you with a uniform.

This is a great way to be part of our program and help out young athletes.

Anyone wanting to be an offical for our Youth Sports Programs can contact the Sports & Recreation Department at t 719-846-4454 or send them an email: communitycenter@trinidad.co.gov.
